Milestone anniversaries are tremendous accomplishments. Our 2021 class represents more than 39,910 combined years from all United States locations, as well our newly integrated Mercy Hospital.

60 YEAR RECIPIENT

Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., MD – Cleveland Clinic Community Care Dr. Esselstyn was born in New York City in 1933. He graduated from Yale University in 1956. He also competed in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, winning a gold medal in the “eights” as a member of the American team. Dr. Esselstyn received his MD from Case Western Reserve

University School of Medicine in 1961. During this time he met and married Ann Crile, the granddaughter of George Washington Crile, founder of Cleveland Clinic. Esselstyn was an intern (1961– 62) and resident (1962–66) at Cleveland Clinic. In 1968 he completed a tour as an Army surgeon in Vietnam where he was

awarded the Bronze Star. Upon his return he rejoined Cleveland Clinic and has served as the President of the Staff, chairman of Cleveland Clinic’s Breast Cancer Task Force and as a member of its Board of Governors. While serving as chairman of the Breast Cancer Task Force, Dr. Esselstyn became interested in preventing disease by targeting the high levels of fat consumed in the typical American diet. Through research, Dr. Esselstyn and his wife have promoted a whole foods, plant-based diet to prevent coronary and cardiovascular disease. He served as the President of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons in 1991. Since 2009, Dr. Esselstyn has served as a Preventive Medicine Consultant and Director of the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Reversal Program for Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute. Dr. Esselstyn has published 2 books and over 150 scientific publications in peer reviewed journals. He has received numerous awards and distinctions including the first ever recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine, the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Cleveland Clinic, the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame Award, the Deerfield Academy Alumni Association Heritage Award in Recognition of Outstanding Achievement and Service, and the Yale University George H.W. Bush ’48 Lifetime of Leadership Award. He served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of Nutrition Action magazine, published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Esselstyn is also on the advisory board of Naked Food Magazine, for which he is also a regular contributor of articles espousing a plant-based diet.

James S. Taylor, MD – Dermatology & Plastic Surgery Institute

Dr. James Taylor is a Consultant Dermatologist and Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Dr. Taylor received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1966 and began his residency training at Cleveland Clinic the same year. Dr. Taylor founded and served as head of the Section of industrial Dermatology (1972-2009), created a fellowship in Contact and Environmental Dermatology and was the first Quality Improvement Officer for the Dermatology-Plastic Surgery Institute (2011-16). Additionally, he is Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of the

Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine. Dr. James Taylor has served six medical organizations in an official capacity as vice-president of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Dermatological Association and as past president of the American Contact Dermatitis Society, the Academy of Medicine of Cleveland and Northern Ohio, and the Cleveland and Ohio Dermatological Societies. Dr. Taylor has been a major contributor to the fields of contact and occupational dermatitis through his continued active participation in the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (since 1976) and in developing Cleveland Clinic’s Patch Test Clinic. Current research interests also include quality and patient safety and clinical outcomes. He has been a consultant to multiple national organizations including the FDA, NIOSH, VA, CPSC, US Air Force, National Research Council, National Quality Forum and the National Academy of Medicine. In total, he has authored or co-authored 404 scientific articles, book chapters, abstracts and letters. Honors have included seven eponymous lecture presentations and honorary membership in 4 national and international dermatological organizations.

Gregory Borkowski, MD – Imaging Institute

Gregory P. Borkowski, MD, FACR, began his career at Cleveland Clinic in 1971 as an intern in the Department of Internal Medicine. He was accepted into the Internal Medicine Residency Program in 1972, serving as Chief Resident his last year. Following his residency, Dr. Borkowski served 2 years in the U.S. Air Force, stationed at Homestead A.F.B., Florida and then at Thule A.F.B., Greenland, where he served as Hospital Commander. He was accepted into the Radiology Residency Program in 1976, again, serving as Chief Resident during his last year in the program. Dr. Borkowski was appointed to Cleveland Clinic Professional Staff

in 1979. From 1984-86, he served as the Head, Section of Abdominal Imaging. In 1984, Dr. Borkowski was appointed as the Vice-chairman of the Division of Radiology. In 1985, he was appointed as Chairman, Department of Diagnostic Radiology. From 1997-2001, Dr. Borkowski also served as the Chairman of the Department of Regional Radiology. In 2007, Dr. Borkowski was appointed Chairman of the Imaging Institute, a position he still holds today. Dr. Borkowski has served on multiple Cleveland Clinic committees including as a member of the Board of Governors (1988-1992), several review and search committees, and served as the Chairman of the Space Allocation and Remodeling Committee for Cleveland Clinic, a position he held for 24 years (1986-2010). He has served two terms as the President of the American Society of Clinical Radiologists (2005-2006, 2016-2017). In 1997, he was elected as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology, a distinguished honor in the field of imaging. He has authored/co-authored numerous publications, book chapters and abstracts. Dr. Borkowski has been involved in many national societies including as an Examiner for the American Board of Radiology.

Monte Casey – Information Technology Division

Monte began his IT healthcare career on June 1, 1971 at Fairview Hospital. He quickly became a programmer, systems analyst, project lead, and manager. He has worked on many hospital systems: Payroll, Medical Records, Time and Attendance, Inventory, Nurse Scheduling, Universal Billing paperless system, and Order Entry and Result Reporting. Monte has many notable accomplishments in his Cleveland Clinic career. Monte designed and implemented the first Nurse Scheduling system in the World. Monte’s design was replicated by ANSOS and later acquired by IBM and marketed internationally. Not only did hospitals utilize Monte’s

design it was also prevalent in the automotive industry. Monte’s design has endured the test of time and is still widely used today, some 40 years later. Monte also worked with Clinical Engineering, to design one of the first employee clocking systems which interfaced with Time and Attendance and Payroll systems. Outside of work, Monte has a successful fly fishing business that he started over 30 years ago – Steelhead Guide. He teaches fly fishing basics and guides clients in steelhead fishing. In December 2018 Monte launched Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing (PHWFF), where volunteers teach fly tying, fly rod building, casting and fly fishing to active military and disabled veterans. Monte has implemented 4 PHWFF programs in 3 years surrounding Greater Cleveland, this encompasses half of the programs of its kind in the state of Ohio. According to Monte, “the IT Hospital Industry has no limitations,” and he believes nothing is impossible, “we just don’t know how to do it yet.” To him, IT is not just a job, it’s exciting, challenging and self-rewarding. “I’ve experienced IT in its infancy, and where we are today and can only imagine health care being like Star Wars over the next 50 years.”

Lea Coleman – Clinic Care

Lea, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, began her career at Cleveland Clinic in 1971 as a registration clerk. Lea transferred to what is now Allogen Laboratories or Tissue Typing in 1978. She attended Cuyahoga Community College part-time and graduated in 1979. Lea has been an integral member of Allogen for many years in an Administrative Assistant role providing vital support for all of Cleveland Clinic’s transplant programs. Lea has worked for more than eight different Laboratory Directors over the years providing close support for patient billing and record management. Lea has been married to her high school sweetheart for over 49

years and together they have 2 daughters and 2 granddaughters whom they enjoy visiting in New York City. Lea’s hobbies include reading, walking, working out at Cleveland Clinic’s fitness center, attending weekend trips, museums and plays.

Eugenia Lee – Surgical Operations

Eugenia Lee is a Perioperative Reprocessing Educator for Cleveland Clinic main campus. Prior to becoming an educator, she worked in the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) for 49 years. Eugenia started her career at Cleveland Clinic main campus on May 24th, 1971. She worked her way up from Coordinator to Assistant Manager. She received her BA degree in Psychology with a minor in education from Cleveland State University. In 1994 she received an MBA degree from Lake Erie College in Painesville. After 34 years of moving up the ladder in the SPD department she went back to school. She attended the Huron School of Nursing and became a

registered nurse in 2005. Eugenia, along with the other reprocessing educators, is responsible for on boarding new caregivers for the Sterile Processing Departments in Cleveland Clinic Health System. They are also responsible for yearly competencies for Sterile Processing Techs, Scrub Techs, Medical Assistants and Nurses who handle instruments and scopes. She has been a mentor and resource person for some of the Cleveland School programs such as CEVEC, True-2-U, Y.O.U.T.H, Louis Stokes programs and the TRI C Sterile Processing Tech program. She has been a member of the Diversity and Inclusion board. Eugenia volunteers every Saturday at the Thea Bowman Hunger Center. She is an active member of Our Lady of Peace church. In her spare time, she likes to spend time with her daughter and her grandson who is a Physician Assistant.
